2024: A Year in Review and What Lies Ahead for 2025

As we wrap up 2024, the stock market has delivered an impressive performance, with the S&P 500 surging nearly 22%. Like many, I underestimated the market’s potential at the start of the year. A key driver has been the "Magnificent 7," a group of standout companies whose influence on the S&P 500 has overshadowed broader market trends. For a more balanced perspective, it’s worth considering the equal-weighted S&P 500, which offers insights into performance excluding these giants.

Bitcoin: Peaks and Plateaus

Bitcoin also experienced a notable rally but seems to have hit a plateau. Speculation about potential policy shifts in 2025—such as the possibility of a US Bitcoin reserve under Trump’s administration—remains uncertain. Without such a reserve, Bitcoin could face significant declines, particularly if major investors start selling. As a largely speculative asset, Bitcoin’s primary use remains in countries with unstable banking systems, far from achieving the status of a global currency.

Optimism for Equity Markets in 2025

Looking ahead to 2025, I am optimistic about equity markets, driven by Trump’s anticipated regulatory rollbacks, efforts to streamline mergers, and the promotion of AI across industries. While a repeat of 2024’s 20% growth may be ambitious, a 10% increase seems achievable. However, economic challenges—particularly for lower-income groups—will persist, and the benefits of these changes may take time to materialize.

AI’s transformative impact cannot be overstated. From saving time and labor to revolutionizing customer service and data analysis, AI is set to redefine productivity. Companies integrating AI with technologies like drones are already seeing significant cost savings and enhanced profit margins. Stocks tied to AI advancements, such as NVDA and Broadcom, are likely to benefit, though not every AI venture will succeed. Investors will need to exercise discernment.

Geopolitical Shifts and Economic Implications

China’s secretive gold purchases in recent months signal a strategic shift away from US Treasuries. This could challenge US Treasury bond sales in 2025, potentially raising interest rates to attract buyers. Meanwhile, oil inventories are 5% below seasonal averages, and rising demand—coupled with geopolitical tensions—could lead to higher prices. Stability this year may give way to volatility if conflicts, such as those involving Iran, escalate.

Argentina’s Economic Transformation

Argentina’s economic turnaround under President Milei has been remarkable. After a challenging adjustment period, the country’s currency has strengthened, and economic growth has surged to 3.9%. This serves as a case study for the long-term benefits of deep spending cuts, a strategy that could inspire similar measures in other nations, including the US.

Shifting Political and Economic Landscapes

Support for Trump among major tech CEOs reflects expectations of reduced regulatory burdens and smoother merger approvals, which could drive profitability for tech giants. However, uncertainties surrounding the House Speaker role under Johnson and internal Republican strife could derail Trump’s plans, offering Democrats potential advantages in upcoming elections.

In the Middle East, Netanyahu’s vision for reshaping the region with US support includes addressing threats like the Houthis and potential regime change in Iran. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine may also approach a resolution, with Russia’s mounting losses and economic strains pushing toward a negotiated peace.

Challenges in Europe and Rising Treasury Yields

Europe faces mounting economic and political challenges, with the UK and Germany at risk of radical shifts. These difficulties could further strengthen the US dollar, impacting global debt and trade. Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield has exceeded forecasts, influencing bond portfolios and mortgage rates. This could pressure home prices and complicate commercial real estate financing.

Climate Narratives and Broader Impacts

Finally, growing skepticism surrounds climate change policies, particularly those perceived as lacking historical perspective. The financial incentives driving certain narratives often overshadow the cyclical nature of climate patterns. As we move into 2025, expect continued debates on these fronts.

Looking Ahead

The year ahead promises significant change and unpredictability. From technological advancements to geopolitical shifts, 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year. Here’s to navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Happy New Year!
